L.A. Tournament Opens With Chang, Stark Tonight
Michael Chang, who lost to Andre Agassi last week in Montreal, may see Agassi again tonight as the Volvo/Los Angeles tournament begins at UCLA. But Chang doesn’t have to play him.
Chang opens against Jonathan Stark in a first-round match that follows a pro-celebrity charity doubles match that features Agassi, Dustin Hoffman and Chris Evert, who are all more likely to have fun than Chang.
Stark, ranked No. 52, is an up-and-coming factor on the men’s tour who nearly defeated Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon.
Chang, ranked No. 8 and seeded third, is the first of the top players to begin.
Pete Sampras and Michael Stich, the top- and second-seeded players, will not play their first-round matches until Tuesday. Wimbledon champion Sampras, ranked No. 1, will open against Andrew Sznajder on Tuesday night and Stich faces Mikael Pernfors in the late afternoon.
