Computer Products Maker to Lay Off 95 in O.C.

A major British computer products manufacturer said Wednesday it is closing its Orange County software development facility and will lay off 95 employees here in early October.

ICL PLC said it is shuttering its ICL Client-Server Systems U.S.A. software development organization, which is based in Irvine, as well as a 45-employee branch in Reston, Va. The company will then center its software work at corporate offices in London.

The company will keep a U.S. sales and support staff of 44 people split among offices in Irvine, Reston, Chicago and New York.

A company spokesman said employees who received layoff notices will be provided severance benefits as well as job-finding assistance. Details of the severance plan were not disclosed.

ICL PLC operates in more than 70 countries and has 25,000 employees. The company posted sales of $4.4 billion for 1992.
