Assessor’s Values vs. Housing Market’s

* Your article, “7.6% Drop in Resale Home Prices Tops U.S.” (Aug. 4), confuses me. Almost every day, an article appears in the paper regarding the drop in resale home prices. Yet, the office of the Orange County assessor continues to raise our property taxes 2% per year!

For those of us who purchased our homes in the late ‘80s, this is absolutely ridiculous. The value of my home, purchased in December, 1988, has dropped over $34,000 based on the offer I was forced to accept last week.

I have protested to the assessor’s office for the past three years--to no avail. I will protest again this year and suggest that other residents do the same. Possibly (Assessor) Brad Jacobs will get the message.

I would suggest that all homeowners in the same situation do the same. It’s easy to do. Just call the Appeals Board at (714) 834-2731 and they will send you the necessary information and forms. The deadline for filing is Sept. 15.
