Lucinda Ballard; Award-Winning Designer

Lucinda Ballard, 87, the first Tony Award-winning costume designer. In 1947, Ballard won the first Tony given for costume design for her work on several productions that season: “Happy Birthday,” “Another Part of the Forest,” “Street Scene,” “John Loves Mary” and “The Chocolate Soldier.” Her second Tony came in 1962 for “The Gay Life.” She retired in that year, but returned to design the costumes for a 1985 revival of Tennessee Williams’ “Night of the Iguana.” She also was nominated for an Academy Award in 1951 for her work on the movie “A Streetcar Named Desire.” In New York City on Thursday of cancer.
