An estimated 60,000 Sudanese have crossed the border into northern Uganda in a dramatic escalation of the region’s refugee crisis.

The U.N. high commissioner for refugees said Wednesday that 106,000 people have now fled southern Sudan since Aug. 5, when the Sudanese government intensified an offensive against rebels. Nearly all have crossed into Uganda.
