* * 1/2 The Juliana Hatfield Three, “Become What You Are,” Mammoth/Atlantic. A great mythology surrounds Hatfield: best buddy of Lemonhead Evan Dando, a self-proclaimed virgin at 25, an alumna of underground punk-pop outfit the Blake Babies. But her second solo album is nowhere near as adventurous as her legend might suggest. The whimsical “My Sister” stands out on KROQ, but little sets the album apart from any of the other dozen or so tuneful, well-executed alternative records released this year. Hatfield appears on Sept. 8 at the Coach House and Sept. 9 at the Roxy.

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
