OUTLOOK: Fullerton begins the season with a 10-game league losing streak and Smilowitz is realistic about the Indians’ prospects this season. “We know we’re not going 10-0 this year, so we want to take things one at a time.” All-league defensive back Ginter returns to lead the defense and Carmony, who started at fullback last season, returns to lead the running game. Byrd, Schatz, and Staffieri are three of the seven sophomores who played prominent roles last season. Smilowitz said the success of the lower-level programs is a sign of hope. Last season, the freshman team was 10-0 and quarterback Young led the ’91 freshmen to a 9-1 finish. “Last year we took our lickings, but this year, we’re another year older. We don’t believe in talking about what we’re going to do, so we’ll let our actions speak for themselves.”
