Bridge Work to Shut Part of Bike Trail

Construction crews on Sept. 13 will close a portion of the San Diego Creek Regional Bicycle Trail so a wood-plank bridge can be torn out and replaced, officials said.

“Your seat can tell when you are crossing it,” said Don Webb, Newport Beach city engineer, referring to the rickety bridge crossing the narrow, willow-choked Bonita Creek. The wooden bridge was built in 1977 and is nearing the end of its design life.

Webb said that two recycled railroad flatcars without wheels will be installed as a new, sturdier structure on the trail that connects Irvine and Newport Beach near the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve.

The popular recreational trail will be closed until Oct. 29 between MacArthur Boulevard and Jamboree Road, forcing pedestrians, joggers and bicyclists to use University Avenue as a bypass. The city will post detour signs as a guide.

The bridge project will cost $160,000, to be paid for by the city of Newport Beach and the Orange County Transportation Authority.
