Knicks Cut Bo Kimble After Only One Season

Former Clipper guard Bo Kimble was waived by the New York Knicks Thursday. Kimble, the nation’s college scoring leader only three years ago, averaged only 3.7 points in nine games last season.

“It was in the best interest of Bo and the Knicks to allow him to seek other opportunities to play at this time,” Knick General Manager Ernie Grunfeld said.

Kimble came to the Knicks last year after averaging 5.6 points in 96 games during two seasons with the Clippers.

Kimble played at USC and Loyola Marymount before being chosen by the Clippers as the No. 8 pick in the 1990 NBA draft. In his senior season at Loyola Marymount in 1989-90, he led the nation in scoring with a 35.3 average as the team reached the NCAA West Regional final.

John Hammond, an assistant coach with the Clippers the last three seasons, has left to become the scouting coordinator and assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons.

Hockey

The Pittsburgh Penguins agreed to a contract terms with left winger Markus Naslund, their first-round draft choice in 1991.

Naslund, a restricted free agent who had been playing in Sweden, reportedly received a $750,000 signing bonus as part of a multiyear deal worth about $600,000 a season.

The New Jersey Devils asked the NHL to review the trade they made with the Ottawa Senators in which they acquired goalie Peter Sidorkiewicz, who is out indefinitely because of a shoulder injury.

Sidorkiewicz had off-season surgery on his right shoulder after injuring it in the final game last season. He and left wing Mike Peluso were dealt to New Jersey for goalie Craig Billington, left wing Troy Mallette and a fourth-round draft choice this year.

The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Alexander Karpovstev, captain of Dynamo Moscow last season, from the Quebec Nordiques for defenseman Mike Hurlburt.

Karpovstev, 23, played the last four seasons in the former Soviet elite league.

Justice Sandra Day O’Connor of the U.S. Supreme Court has yet to rule if Marianne Stanley should be temporarily reinstated as the USC women’s basketball coach until an appellate court in San Francisco decides whether to reinstate the coach for the 1993-94 season.

Golf

Steve Stricker shot a six-under-par 66 to take the first-round lead at the Canadian Open.

Nick Price led a group at 68 that also included left-hander Phil Mickelson, rookie Jimmy Johnston, Scott Gump and Brad Bryant.

Soccer

A judge in Bern, Switzerland, has ordered European Soccer’s governing body, UEFA, to reinstate Olympique Marseille of France in European Cup competition.

Marseille was suspended from the European Cup because of allegations that it used bribes to fix a French league game.

Soccer star Diego Maradona has signed an agreement to play for an Argentine first division team.

Miscellany

William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, said that 65-year-old Chicago Stadium, which will be replaced by a new arena next year, will be torn down, but may remain standing for the circus and ice shows until 1998.

Minnesota Fats, the pool player portrayed in the movie “The Hustler,” was placed in a hospital psychiatric ward in Nashville, Tenn., after becoming disoriented. Fats, whose real name is Rudolf Wanderone, was committed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. . . . Tim Schnellenberger, son of Louisville football Coach Howard Schnellenberger, was in good condition at a Miami hospital after being shot by an intruder during a botched robbery attempt at a friend’s home.
