CERRITOS : Girl, 15, Arrested After Knife Incident at School
A 15-year-old Cerritos High School sophomore was arrested Thursday after allegedly pulling a knife from her book bag and scuffling with school officials. During the morning struggle, Assistant Principal William Hewitt tripped over a chair and cracked two ribs, authorities said.
The girl was in Hewitt’s office because she allegedly had run away from home and was truant from class, school officials said. Authorities found her wandering in front of the campus, brought her to the office and summoned her mother.
Shortly after the mother arrived, Hewitt and a security aide allegedly saw the girl reach into her bag for a knife with a six-inch blade. They seized the knife during the struggle that injured Hewitt, who was treated at a hospital and released.
Sheriff’s deputies booked the girl for assault and released her to the custody of her mother, Lt. Jim Valdez said.
