LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Gang-Related Killings Down 16% From Last Year
Gang-related homicides in Los Angeles County declined 16% in the first eight months of 1993, compared to the same period of 1992, according to figures released Wednesday by Sheriff Sherman Block.
Block said reports from law enforcement agencies throughout the county showed that gang-related homicides dropped from 523 in the eight-month period last year to 438 this year.
“I think some communities are just saying ‘enough,’ ” the sheriff said at his monthly news conference. “I think that some of these communities are finally just getting fed up with this terrible waste and carnage that’s going on, and perhaps the cooler heads are going to prevail.”
