Music awards
Oct. 8 is the deadline to apply for the sixth annual Music Center Spotlight Awards competition, open to solo performers in ninth through 12th grade in any Southern California school. Categories include: classical and musical theater vocal, classical and jazz instrumental music, and ballet and modern dance. A final performance March 10 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles will determine the top winners in each category, who will receive $5,000. For information, call (213) 972-769.
Computer gift
Vital Link Orange County, a program that prepares non-college-bound high school students for the workplace, has received a gift of 200 computers from AST Research of Irvine. High schools participating in the program include Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Los Alamitos and Santa Ana. In addition to acquiring keyboard proficiency, students will learn common work-related programs like word processing, spread sheets and database applications.
Student trustee
Sonora High School senior Le Kha has taken a seat on the Fullerton Joint Union High School District’s board of trustees. As a non-voting member, Kha will provide a student viewpoint as trustees make decisions that affect pupils.
Leadership conference
Mission Viejo student Jasmine Waddell spent eight days this summer in Columbus, Ohio, at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation World Leadership Congress. She joined a group of more than 200 high school student leaders from all 50 states and more than 20 foreign countries to study and discuss the “Role of the United States in the World Community.” Topics ranged from pollution prevention and civic responsibility to health care and the arts.
College preview
College shopping? Foothill and Tustin high school students and parents are invited to College Night from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 13 at Tustin High, 1171 El Camino Real. More than 100 representatives from California and out-of-state colleges and military academies will hand out literature and answer questions about their institutions.
