Canyon Stays Unbeaten With Victory Over Estancia
Canyon remained undefeated, and Estancia might have found a running back as Canyon defeated the Eagles, 30-3, in the final nonleague contest for both teams Friday night at El Modena.
Adam Hoover connected on 11 of 19 passes for 199 yards, and teammate Joel Reese rushed for 94 yards to lead the Comanche attack.
Estancia’s running back of the future could be sophomore Bachy Gonzales. Gonzales, who made his varsity debut in the second half, carried the ball 20 times for 103 yards. He was previously playing on junior varsity.
Canyon (4-0-1) scored on its first possession on a six-yard run by Reese. It increased its lead to 10-0 with 5 minutes 44 seconds left in the second quarter, when Casey Wilson connected on a 45-yard field goal, his fifth of the season.
Jerrick Harper scored from the five with 1:06 left in the half for Canyon, but the extra-point attempt was blocked by Mark Mollner.
Estancia (1-4) scored with nine seconds left in the half on a 37-yard field goal by Juan Rodriguez.
Canyon missed a chance to score in the third quarter, reaching the one before two consecutive sacks of Hoover pushed the Comanches all the way back to the 29.
But Canyon added two fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 17-yard run by Reese and a 49-yard pass from Hoover to Gunnar Strunz.
