The Bishop Amat girls and the San Gabriel boys won Southern Section Division I titles at last weekend’s San Gabriel Valley cross-country championships at Mt. San Antonio College.

San Gabriel was led by Oscar Estrada, who clocked 16 minutes for the fastest time of the day. The Matadors finished with a combined time of 83 minutes 48 seconds. Diamond Bar finished second, Nogales third and Rowland fourth.

Malinalli Martinez of Bishop Amat finished second overall behind St. Lucy’s Annie Ebiner to lead the Lancers to the girls’ Division I title. Ebiner, who helped St. Lucy’s win Division II, finished in 19:17. Martinez clocked 20:23.

Covina won the boys’ Division II title.

The Pasadena football team lost its first two games under first-year Coach Jack Loos, but the Bulldogs have won three in a row with a new offense that features the running talent of junior quarterback Chris McAlister.

McAlister, the son of former Blair standout James McAlister, rushed for 109 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Bulldogs in their 33-13 victory over St. Francis.

McAlister played at St. Francis in 1992.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Mt. San Antonio College football team plays host to Palomar on Saturday in a Mission Conference game.

The Mounties (5-0) are coming off a 40-12 victory over Saddleback that ended Saddleback’s 15-game home winning streak. Leonard Green rushed for 80 yards and three touchdowns and caught nine passes for 131 yards to pace Mt. SAC.

Cody Lee Smith completed 24 of 38 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Jim McHenry caught seven passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Jimmy Irby had four sacks for the Mounties.

Citrus (2-2) plays host to Chaffey Saturday after losing at San Bernardino Valley College, 37-20, in its Foothill Conference opener last week.

Aaron Meschuk scored on a 26-yard run and Nick Paoletto scored on a 32-yard pass play to help give the Owls a 17-0 lead. But Citrus could not hold off a second-half rally.

Pasadena City College (1-4) will try for its second consecutive victory when the Lancers travel to San Diego Mesa on Saturday.

PCC is coming off its first win, a 23-17 decision over Riverside that the Lancers secured by forcing a fumble inside the Lancers’ 20 in the final minutes.

PCC quarterback Clifton Issac gained 113 yards and scored two touchdowns.

PCC will honor the Junior Rose Bowl teams of 1951, 1966 and 1977 at a dinner following its homecoming game against El Camino on Oct. 23. (818) 585-7384.

COLLEGES

Four freshmen on the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team were injured Monday in an automobile accident near the student housing complex.

Lori Talley, Michaela Ross, Tiffany Maxwell and Taffany Maxwell suffered multiple injuries when the car in which they were traveling struck a tree.

Ross, who graduated from Newport Harbor High, suffered a partially collapsed lung, fractured pelvis and fractured lower vertebrae among other injuries and required plastic surgery to repair severe cuts around her right eye, a school spokesman said in a statement.

Taffany Maxwell, who graduated from Long Beach Millikan High, broke her arm in seven places and required 40 stitches to close a gash on her right leg. Her twin, Tiffany, suffered a fractured facial bone and numerous cuts.

Talley, who graduated from Bellarmine-Jefferson High in Burbank, suffered a sprained left wrist and sprained right arm.

La Verne’s football team plays its second consecutive nonconference game Saturday when the Leopards play host to Azusa Pacific.

La Verne (4-1, 3-0 in the SCIAC) is coming off a 38-21 victory over Menlo. The Leopards are averaging 410 yards a game. Danny Pasquil has rushed for 577 yards and Ryan Campuzano has passed for 1,029. Jeff McDaniel has made six of seven field-goal attempts.

Azusa Pacific (1-4) lost to Humboldt State, 20-10, last week. The Cougars were leading, 10-9, after three quarters, but gave up 11 unanswered points.

After a bye last week, Pomona-Pitzer (1-3, 0-2 in the SCIAC) resumes its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule Saturday against Occidental.

The Sagehens have the top-rated passing defense in the SCIAC, limiting opponents to only 137 yards a game. Tony Fadulu has rushed for 359 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Josh Spitzen has passed for 562 yards.

Claremont (0-3, 0-2), which had a bye last week, plays a nonconference game Saturday at Menlo. Claremont is averaging 189 yards a game. Chris Rattay has intercepted two passes for the Stags.

Claire Turchi of Pomona-Pitzer and Tim Cooley and Ramsey Gerber of Claremont advanced to the Rolex National Small College tennis championships with regional victories last weekend at Claremont.

Turchi, a freshman, defeated Stephanie Desmond of Trinity (Tex.), 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

Cooley and Gerber defeated Todd Born and Mike Mell of Redlands, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), to win the men’s doubles. Cooley won the NCAA Division II doubles championship last year with Ryan McKee, who graduated.

The small college championships will be staged Oct. 28-31 at Edmond, Okla.

Azusa Pacific’s cross-country teams will compete in the Golden State Athletic Conference championships Saturday in Newport Beach.

Tony Bergman is the top men’s runner for a team that is ranked No. 4 in the NAIA coaches poll, the Cougars’ highest ranking ever. Nicole DeVries is Azusa Pacific’s top women’s runner.

Allison Thompson of the Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer team tied the school career record for goals when she scored her 30th during a 2-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Thompson’s next goal will eclipse the record she shares with Shannon Payne. Pomona (6-6-1) has six matches left.

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s and women’s cross-country teams will compete in the San Diego Invitational this weekend.

Pomona freshman Cliff Curtis placed second among 69 runners last week at the Poly Invitational with a time of 32:25 over the 10-K course. Rosetta Hunter finished 17th in the women’s event with a time of 19:10 over a 5-K course.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Oscar Estrada, San Gabriel--Estrada ran the fastest time of the day to win the Division I race and lead San Gabriel to the Division I title at the San Gabriel Valley cross-country championships at Mt. SAC.

Estrada was clocked in 16 minutes over the hilly Mt. SAC course.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Claire Turchi, Pomona-Pitzer-- Turchi, a freshman, advanced to the Rolex Small College tennis championships by winning the regional singles title last weekend at Claremont.

Turchi will compete for the national title Oct. 28-31 at Edmond, Okla.

MISCELLANY

The San Gabriel Valley Marlins won the California State championship for the 30-and-over division of the National Adult Baseball Assn. The Marlins defeated the Thousand Oaks Yankees, 8-7, for the championship. Dave Hartman of Glendora was the winning pitcher in the championship game.
