One young man died and a teen-age girl was critically injured when a car driven by a 19-year-old, who police believe was driving under the influence of alcohol, careened off the side of a road early Saturday morning.

Tobias Norton, 18, of Brea died instantly in the crash near the intersection of Rosecrans Avenue and Camino La Vista at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

The driver, Gilbert Nunez of Fullerton, was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and then taken to Orange County Jail, where he was held in lieu of $25,000 bail on suspicion of manslaughter and felony drunk driving.

A 17-year-old girl from Brea whose name was withheld by police was in critical but stable condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.

Police said Nunez’s car was heading east on Rosecrans when it missed the curve, hurtling off the road and smashing into a four-foot-high retaining wall. The passenger’s side door also hit a tree, according to Sgt. Gary Miller.
