SOUTH ROUNDUP : Brohm, Louisville on Target in Second Half, 35-27

Jeff Brohm threw three second-half touchdown passes to give No. 23 Louisville a 35-27 come-from-behind victory over Southern Mississippi Saturday at Louisville, Ky.

The Cardinals (6-1), who trailed 24-9 at halftime, got the deciding score early in the fourth quarter when Anthony Shelman went over the top from a yard out for a 28-27 lead.

Southern Mississippi (1-5) had three costly second-half turnovers, with a fumble and an interception leading to 13 Louisville points.

Brohm completed 22 of 34 for 304 yards.

No. 14 North Carolina 41, Georgia Tech 3--Georgia Tech’s hopes for upsetting the Tar Heels ended less than five minutes into the Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta when Tech’s sophomore quarterback Donnie Davis was injured after throwing an interception.

After that, North Carolina quarterback Jason Stanicek went to work, throwing two first-half touchdowns and running for another score.

The Tar Heels (7-1, 4-1 in the ACC) turned two first-quarter interceptions into touchdowns for a quick 14-0 lead and were never in trouble against the Yellow Jackets (2-4, 1-4) in a game played in a misty rain.

Stanicek completed 11 of 15 passes for 147 yards in the first half. He was one for one for five yards in the third quarter as North Carolina kept the ball on the ground. Stanicek sat out the fourth quarter.

Wake Forest 20, Clemson 16--Jim Kemp, the son of Jack Kemp and the brother of Jeff, ran for one touchdown and threw for another as the Demon Deacons (2-4, 1-2) won at Clemson, S.C. It was Wake Forest’s first victory at Memorial Stadium since 1961, covering 16 consecutive losses.

A year ago, Clemson lost to Wake Forest after winning the previous 15 games in the series.

Kemp, who threw for 309 yards against North Carolina last week, ran two yards for a touchdown and passed 10 yards to Todd Dixon for a touchdown that lifted Wake Forest to a 13-0 lead over the Tigers (4-2, 3-2).

The Demon Deacons closed their scoring with John Leach’s six-yard run in the third quarter.

Kemp, a senior starting his third game this season, completed 15 of 23 passes for 177 yards.

Maryland 26, Duke 18--The Terrapins finally won their first game of the season as Scott Milanovich threw for two touchdowns and scored another at College Park, Md.

Milanovich completed 29 of 36 passes for 414 yards to help Maryland climb out of last place in the ACC. The Terrapins (1-6, 1-3) overcame four turnovers to deal Duke (1-6, 0-4) its 17th straight ACC setback.

North Carolina State 24, Marshall 17--Backup fullback Rob Brown scored on a 22-yard run with 1:34 left as the Wolfpack (4-2) beat the defending I-AA champions at Raleigh, N.C. It was North Carolina State’s second comeback victory over the Thundering Herd in three seasons.

Tulsa 23, Memphis State 19--Quarterback Gus Frerotte threw for 290 yards and a touchdown as the Golden Hurricane (2-4) defeated the Tigers (4-3) at Memphis, Tenn.

Frerotte, a 6-4 senior, completed 24 of 42 passes, 14 to Chris Penn for 184 yards.
