Felix Potvin stopped 32 of Detroit’s 33 shots Saturday night at Detroit to lead the surging Toronto Maple Leafs to a 2-1 victory over the Red Wings.

The victory gave the Maple Leafs a sweep of the weekend home-and-home series and improved their record to 6-0, their best start since 1944-45. The Red Wings dropped to 1-5, their worst start in eight years.

The Maple Leafs were outshot 11-6 in the first period, but still took a 2-0 lead on goals by Dave Andreychuk and John Cullen. Mark Howe scored a goal for Detroit in the second period.

Semak’s first career hat trick included two shorthanded goals and spoiled the Islanders’ home opener. All six New Jersey goals were scored on Ron Hextall, who was pulled for backup goaltender Tom Draper to start the third period. For the Islanders, their 1-4-0 start is their worst after five games since 1973-74.

Pittsburgh 5, Hartford 3--At Pittsburgh, Kevin Stevens scored his first goal of the season and Martin Straka got his National Hockey League-leading eighth goal. The Penguins have won 13 consecutive regular-season home games--10 last season.

Goaltender Tom Barrasso returned to the Penguins’ lineup and got his first victory. Barrasso had not played since Oct. 7, when he left a game after one period because of a strained groin muscle.

Tampa Bay 4, Ottawa 1--John Tucker scored twice before 18,238 at St. Petersburg and the Senators remained winless. Tucker scored the eventual game-winner at 3:08 of the second period.

The Senators have lost five straight away from home over two seasons after a league-record 38-game road losing streak.

Washington 4, Buffalo 3--Al Iafrate scored the go-ahead goal with 6:57 left as the Capitals got their first victory of the season. Iafrate also had two assists.

Washington outshot the Sabres 49-22, but needed third-period goals by Todd Krygier and Iafrate to gain the victory.

Grant Fuhr had 45 saves for the Sabres, who have lost five in succession.

Dallas 4, St. Louis 0--Andy Moog notched his 18th career shutout as the Stars remained unbeaten at Dallas. Moog made 26 saves to boost the Stars’ record to 2-0-2 at home before a sellout crowd of 16,914.

Moog shut out St. Louis for the first time in his career before Dallas’ second home sellout of the season. Jarkko Varvio, Brent Gilchrist, Grant Ledyard and Russ Courtnall scored for the Stars as Dallas handed St. Louis its first defeat.

Quebec 5, Montreal 2--Mats Sundin, Chris Simon and Owen Nolan scored in a 2:56 span of the second period at Montreal to lead the Nordiques. The victory gave the Nordiques the opener of a home-and-home series with their provincial rivals that takes the teams to Quebec City for a game Monday night.

Winnipeg 1, Chicago 0--Nelson Emerson scored 41 seconds into overtime at Winnipeg. Emerson came from behind the net to poke it in and the goal judge had to decide whether it was thrown in or scored legally. He ruled in Winnipeg’s favor, sparking a furious response from the Blackhawks.

Vancouver 3, Edmonton 2--Greg Adams scored a power-play goal with 1:27 left at Edmonton. Adams tipped a slap shot by Jiri Slegr high over a sprawling Bill Ranford.

Steve Rice, who scored both Edmonton goals, had given the Oilers a 2-1 lead early in the third when he tipped Dave Manson’s shot behind a screened Kirk McLean. But defenseman Dana Murzyn scored a shorthanded goal at 13:15 of the third to tie the score.

Boston 1, San Jose 1--Ray Bourque’s third-period power play goal enabled the Bruins to tie the game at San Jose. Jamie Burke scored for the Sharks.
