Sean Fitzgerald passed for 285 yards and two touchdowns in little more than two quarters of play to lead visiting Valley College to a 38-7 victory over Ventura in a Western State Conference game.

Hector Ortega’s 93-yard return of the opening kickoff gave Valley a 6-0 lead and sent the Monarchs (5-0, 4-0) on their way to a school-record 35-point first quarter.

Valley took a 14-0 lead when Irving Carter (10 carries for 29 yards) capped a six-play, 51-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown run.

Fitzgerald’s five-yard touchdown pass to Brian Bernier gave the Monarchs a 21-0 lead and his 45-yard bomb to Bernier capped Valley’s first-quarter outburst with 40 seconds left in the period. Bernier had six receptions for 115 yards.

Carter scored on a six-yard run in between Bernier’s touchdowns.

Fitzgerald, a sophomore transfer from Idaho State, completed 18 of 24 passes in the game, 17 of 23 for 264 yards in the first half.

Ventura (0-5, 0-4), which had scored only one touchdown in its first four games, was held to 33 yards in total offense and one first down in the first half.

The Pirates’ only score came with 48 seconds left in the third quarter on a one-yard run by Damon Hill (85 yards in 16 carries).
