Apple Introduces New Models: Apple Computer, acknowledging that Macintosh sales have been hampered by a reputation for high prices, introduced several models for home, school and office that are expected to sell for as little as $969. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company also introduced two upgraded PowerBook Duo notebook models that can be run independently or connected to a desktop machine; they’re the first from Apple to weigh less than five pounds. In addition, Apple folded its Centris line into the Quadra group. In a sign of the competitive times, Apple said it will no longer use a “suggested retail price.” That action reflects the fact that resellers almost always sell well below the stated list price.
