Steve Israel, the Rams’ No. 2 draft selection a year ago, has moved into the starting lineup, replacing cornerback Darryl Henley, who remains on a paid leave of absence to deal with legal problems.

Israel started twice last season when the Rams opened with six defensive backs against the Falcons in their two meetings, and was on the field in a similar role last week against Atlanta. He also replaced an injured Henley against Pittsburgh this season.

Both the Detroit Lions and Rams might have to play Sunday without their top defenders.

The Lions don’t expect linebacker Pat Swilling to play because of a sore ankle.

And the Rams are planning to play without defensive tackle Sean Gilbert, who was unable to practice Thursday because of a sore hamstring. Also, Coach Chuck Knox said defensive linemen Robert Young and Tony Woods will not play because of injuries.
