SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Some wins are worth waiting for.

Dorsey High went four years before beating Carson, 18-13, in a Southern Pacific Conference football game Thursday night at Gardena High.

The Dons scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a span of just over three minutes and held off a late rally to notch their first victory against Carson since the 1989 City 4-A championship game. It was also the first regular season victory in nine years against the Colts for Coach Paul Knox.

Said Dorsey senior linebacker E.Z. Anderson: “We didn’t play as well as we’re capable (of), but we definitely have paid our dues. We came around and finally beat Carson. I’ve been waiting for this for three years.”

Trailing 6-2, Antwain Wilson scored on a 69-yard punt return with 9:50 to play, and running back Che Johnson ran in the two-point conversion for a 10-6 lead.

An interception by Dorsey defensive back Robert Guillory set up a 31-yard touchdown pass from Rodric Brown to Johnson with 6:28 left. Johnson’s two-point conversion run increased Dorsey’s lead to 18-6.

Carson closed to 18-13 when quarterback Ramon Rogers scrambled for a 13-yard touchdown with 2:23 to play. The Colts regained possession with 1:09 left at their own 38-yard line.

Carson drove to the Dorsey 25-yard line with 39 seconds left, but Rogers threw four consecutive incomplete passes. The Dons took possession with 21 seconds to go and ran out the clock.

“I don’t consider it an upset,” Johnson said. “We’ve had mental lapses and haven’t played to our physical abilities. We’re an emotional team and tonight we put it all together.”

Dorsey opened a 2-0 lead on a safety with 1:29 left in the first quarter after a Carson punt snap sailed out of the back of the end zone.

Carson took advantage of a Dorsey fumble to take a 6-2 lead on a one-yard plunge by John Houston with 7:19 remaining before halftime.

The Dons, who managed only one first down and 15 yards offense in the first half, were out-gained, 196-85, and lost three fumbles.
