THINGS NOT SEEN by Lynna Williams (Little, Brown: $9.95; 213 pp.). A mischievous humor runs through the best stories in Lynna Williams’ first collection. In “Personal Testimony,” Ellen Whitmore, the irreverent, adopted daughter of a Fundamentalist minister turns her stay at a church summer camp into a profitable venture by writing accounts of religious conversions for other campers; a bewildered husband searches for the hidden meaning in a note left by his wife in “Afghanistan.” Williams’ more somber stories are equally readable, but less polished.
