GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ‘93-’94: CENTURY LEAGUE : 1992-93 IN REVIEW : Highlights
Villa Park won the league title under the guidance of Coach Len Whitacre in his first season with the Spartans. The championship came down to the season’s last game, Villa Park vs. Canyon. The Spartans won the title outright, 53-34, over the Comanches, who finished second. Maureen Skehan had 15 points, 12 steals and four rebounds in the victory. The Spartans secured at least a tie for the league championship when they defeated Santa Ana Valley, 41-36, a week earlier. In that game, Skehan led the team with 11 points and Michelle Jacquot had eight steals. . . . El Modena’s Jamie Shine was voted the league’s MVP. Shine averaged a league-leading 16.5 points, 13th best in the county. Her 12 rebounds per game also led the league and were fourth best in the county. One of her finest games came at the end of the season, when the Vanguards defeated Orange, 54-35. Shine scored 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds against the Panthers. . . . Villa Park was eliminated in the first round of the Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs, 44-43, by University. With three seconds to play and down by three, Villa Park’s Tara Earl was fouled on her three-point shot attempt. However, Earl was only able to make two of three. Canyon was defeated in the first round by Edison, 64-51. Rona Rathod had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Comanches. El Modena reached the Division II-A playoffs, where they were defeated by Kennedy, 45-36, in the first round. Shine had 17 points in the loss.
