SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Compton Dominguez had only one goal in Friday night’s game. The Dons wanted to avenge last year’s loss to Esperanza in the second round.

Sophomore running back Donald Davis rushed 16 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns as Dominguez overpowered the Aztecs, 35-19, in the first round of the Division II playoffs.

The Dons (9-1) took a first-quarter lead when Zachery Swopshire caught a 49-yard pass from Anthony Bilbo.

Davis then gave the Dons a 14-0 lead on a 62-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes 10 seconds left in the first half.

After an interception by Brad Kircher, Esperanza got on the board with a seven-yard touchdown run by Chris Stretch with 40 seconds left in the half.

But Dominguez marched back down the field and took a 21-7 halftime lead on a 13-yard run by Bilbo.

The Aztecs (7-4) bounced back from a dismal first half, during which they gained only 90 yards, when Nolan Munir caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Stretch.

But Dominguez didn’t yield the momentum, capping an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard run by Vincent Parker. The drive proved pivotal by eating more than five minutes off the clock.

After Esperanza scored on a seven-yard pass to Frank Abatangelo from Stretch, Davis scored his second touchdown on a seven-yard run that gave Dominguez a 35-19 lead with 42 seconds to play.
