MUGHAL MINIATURES by J.M. Rogers (Thames & Hudson: $15.95; 128 pp., illustrated, paperback original). The latest entry in Thames & Hudson’s handsome “Eastern Art” series surveys painting in Northern Indian under the dynasty founded by Babur in the early 16th century. The fusion of Indian, European, Persian and Chinese influences in these small paintings reflect the eclectic nature of the Mughal Empire. The rather technical text may discourage general readers, but the pastel delicacy of the illustrations exerts an irresistible charm: Even the elephants appear graceful.
