Strike Continues as NHL, Officials Remain Snagged Over Benefits

A demand by NHL game officials for $750,000 in benefits, nearly as much as the $850,000 in salary they would gain over a four-year deal, has sent the strike by referees and linesmen into its 11th day, with no end in sight.

Jeff Pash, the NHL’s senior vice president and general counsel, said Wednesday that the league and the officials are in accord on salary, insurance and severance pay, but progress had halted when the officials specified the amount of the benefits increase.

Don Meehan, who represents the NHL Officials Assn., called the $750,000 a concession because it’s 50% less than his first proposal.

Pash and Meehan talked briefly Wednesday but did not schedule another meeting.
