OUTLOOK

The most important thing, sometimes, is having a firm grasp on reality. And the reality is that the Vaqueros’ goal this year is to win 10 games and finish with a .500 record. After a 2-19 season, that’s a good goal to have, especially for a team that continues to be young despite having seven returning lettermen. In addition to its inexperience, Irvine’s weaknesses include its size--only one senior is 5-10 or taller. Hard work, a positive attitude and mental discipline are among Irvine’s strengths, and Brazell hopes those assets will help the Vaqueros develop as the season wears on. Another key is how well they are able to grasp the fundamentals. Team MVP Stevens (10.3 points, 5.6 rebounds) returns after a second-team all-league performance. A hard worker, she wasn’t even a starter on junior varsity as freshman. Newe, the point guard, and Woodruff could develop into scoring threats. The defense should be much improved after allowing 65 points per game last year.
