OUTLOOK
Marrujo, the first-year coach, hopes his team can finish with a better record than the 9-9 they posted last season. But Marrujo admits it could be an uphill struggle. While the team has plenty of players eager to learn, Marrujo said the two top players are gone. “We lost one to graduation and one to volleyball,” he said. Nevertheless, Marrujo still expects some exceptional play from Cappel, who averaged 13 points and 13.5 rebounds last year. “She is definitely our strongest player. And she could be the key to our success,” Marrujo said. Other players Marrujo hopes will blossom are Cervantes, a junior who will be playing forward. “She averaged five points a game last year, but I think she has come a long way as a player.” But while he has plenty of hope for his young team, he realizes that experience is a glaring void. “It’s always nice to have experience, but when you don’t have it, you have to look to other things to compensate,” he said. “We will be facing some tough teams, but I think if we can get some leadership from Cappel, we could have a good season.”
