BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Verbum Dei Outruns Loyola, 90-79

Verbum Dei’s lightning-quick backcourt combination of Andre Miller and Jamal Cobbs outran the host Loyola Cubs Friday to win the Loyola Tip-Off Classic, 90-79.

Miller led his team with 25 points, nine rebounds and eight steals, and Cobbs also dominated with 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Despite the Eagles’ excellent team defense, they could not contain the Cubs’ Toby Bailey, who finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Toby’s brother, Ryan (Moose) Bailey, contributed 16 points.

Records: Verbum Dei 3-0; Loyola 2-1.

Fremont 70, Westchester 69--Antonio Hines’ three-pointer at the buzzer lifted Fremont in a nonleague game at Westchester.

Fremont guard Calvin Patterson, who made three three-point shots in the game, led all scorers with 20 points.

Records: Fremont 1-0; Westchester 0-1.

Manual Arts 62, Washington 59--Manual Arts went on a 15-8 run in the fourth quarter and upset the Generals in a nonconference game at Washington.

The Generals were trailing 60-57 with 45 seconds to play when Toiler forward Andrew Dawson stole the ball and made a lay-up to ice the game.

Washington led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but Manual Arts slowly closed the gap by playing solid defense. Washington forward Dayron Harris led all scorers with 22 points, and forward David Rickenbacker led the Toilers with 12 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Bell 50, Eagle Rock 42--After advancing to a tournament final for the first time in its girls’ basketball history, Bell won the Eagle Rock tournament Friday night, 50-42, over the host team.

Bell’s Alma Ruvalcaba was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The 5-foot-2 sophomore guard had 14 points Friday and scored 42 points in three tournament games. Serrano and forward Cindy Garcia were named to the all-tournament team for Bell. Rupi Purcell added 11 points and Karina Hernandez also had 10 rebounds.

Eagle Rock climbed within 31-27 on three consecutive three-point baskets with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter. Sandra Munguia and Ruvalcaba, however, responded with four points each during a 12-4 run for a 43-31 lead with 4:43 to play. Bell then made five of six free throws in the final 1:47 to secure the victory.

Records: Bell 3-0; Eagle Rock 2-1.

Jefferson 49, Poly 34--Chaka Smith scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the first-half to lift the Democrats in the consolation game of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Jackie Leverett added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Records: Poly 1-2, Jefferson 2-1.

Roosevelt 76, Kennedy 49--Denise Caudillo scored 23 points to lead four players in double figures for the host Roughriders in a nonconference game Wednesday.

Leona Jacobs added 15 points and Edna Alvarez and Zenobia Tyson Hunt had 12 each.

Records: Kennedy 0-1; Roosevelt 1-0.

Washington 44, South Gate 36--Pleshette Burrell had a game-high 21 points and Mercedes Edwards scored nine to help the Generals pull away in the fourth quarter of the nonconference game Thursday.

Records: Washington 1-0; South Gate 0-1.
