In Praise of Poland
Krakow is even more wonderful than Helena Zukowski has told us (“Poland’s Cinderella City,” Nov. 14). She left out a few must-see attractions. Art lovers can see an original Leonardo da Vinci at the Czartoryski Museum along with an original Rembrandt and some Turkish Army tents captured in the siege of Vienna in 1683.
You don’t have to be Catholic to appreciate the inspiring art, architecture and symbolism in Arka Pana (“The Lord’s Ark”), otherwise known as the Church of Our Lady, Mother of God, Queen of Poland, in the center of Nowa Huta, arranged for and built by the erstwhile archbishop (now Pope) who overcame the obstacles placed by Communist authorities in the 1970s. It was hard to find, but we happened to stop at a church where we found a young English-speaking priest.

Poland has always been the last place I ever wanted to visit. After reading Helena’s love story, it is now No. 1 on my agenda.
