COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton’s Carlson Leads Way to Riverside Tournament Title
Kevin Carlson capped an impressive four-game run by scoring 25 points to help Fullerton College to a 95-77 victory over Irvine Valley in the title game of the Riverside tournament Saturday.
Carlson, named most valuable player, averaged 20 points per game in the tournament. He had 18 points in the first half as Fullerton (12-2) opened a 50-45 lead.
Irvine Valley (7-5) cut the gap to two, 65-63, with 12:19 left. But the Hornets outscored Irvine Valley, 30-14, the rest of the way.
“Anytime you win a 16-team tournament, that is an accomplishment,” Fullerton Coach Roger See said.
Tamar Ross, an all-tournament selection, keyed the 30-14 run with 10 of his 13 points.
Rashad Wilson had 20 points and Damon Sims had 19 for Irvine Valley.
In the second round of the Hancock women’s basketball tournament:
Golden West 77, Victor Valley 67--Michelle Kravic had 19 points to lead Golden West (11-2).
In the championship game of the Los Angeles Tournament:
Ventura 66, Cypress 63--Forward Julie Hardy, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, had 29 points and 11 rebounds for Ventura (8-3). Cypress (11-2) guard Judy Caruso led the Chargers with 19 points.
In women’s nonconference basketball:
Orange Coast 88, Grossmont 62--Leann Kazmer, who had 20 rebounds, and America Robledo, with 14 rebounds, each had 20 points for visiting Orange Coast (9-3).
In the State community college wrestling tournament:
Padgett wins title, honor--Rancho Santiago’s Matt Padgett finished a 32-3 season by pinning Fresno’s Brian Haupt in the 167-pound final to win the division championship and earn most valuable wrestler honors in Santa Rosa.
Rancho Santiago finished eighth with 47.75 points to 116.50 for champion Fresno. Golden West was 12th with 33.5 points, and Cypress was 18th with 7.5.
In the 134-pound final, Rancho Santiago’s Dave Niedringhaus was defeated by Detren Gant of Fresno, 7-1. At 177 pounds, Golden West’s Eric Gaunt lost, 10-8, in the final to Vagan Adzhenyan of East Los Angeles, and in the heavyweight final, Golden West’s Mike Bolster was beaten, 16-5, by Mike Carolan of Diablo Valley.
