Seven residents have been named to a new safety committee that will study ways to reduce crime.

City Councilman Sal Sapien said the group, appointed by the council this week, will hold public meetings, review police and city staff activities and make a final report to the council on ways to improve safety.

The committee will be dissolved after making its report in February or March, Sapien said.

The members are Barbara Beaty, Harrison Hamada, Connie Lo Bello, Nora McKie, James Nelson, William Snyder and Edward Royce.

Royce is the father of Rep. Ed Royce (R-Fullerton). Other members include apartment managers, school secretaries and business people, Sapien said. He called the group “very high-quality, interested, motivated people.”

The first meeting will be held Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Stanton City Hall, 7800 Katella Ave.

Council members have said they want the commission to knit together anti-crime efforts by city, business, resident and youth organizations.

Sapien said the temporary group will have strong support from city code enforcement workers and the Sheriff’s Department, which provides police services to the city.
