A 47-year-old Tustin man who was picking aluminum from trash behind an apartment complex was shot in the neck early Friday by a man who then took his car, police said.

Kop Hong was reported in satisfactory condition at Tustin Hospital Medical Center after a bullet passed through the back of his neck and out his mouth, Sgt. David Kreyling said.

Hong was salvaging cans behind the Pacific Points Apartments in the 13800 block of Tustin East Drive just before 5 a.m., police said, when a shouting man emerged from some bushes with a handgun. As Hong tried to walk away, the assailant shot him and fled in Hong’s car.
