Arizona State Handles Northridge

The countdown continues for Arizona State. Another game, another injury.

Isaac Burton, the Sun Devils’ top scorer, twisted his right ankle in the second half of a 100-81 nonconference victory over Cal State Northridge on Friday night.

Arizona State has won two of its four games and lost a player each time. But Stevin Smith, an All-Pacific 10 guard, scored a season-high 29 points and had eight assists. Already the owner of conference records for three-point shots attempted and made, the senior converted seven of 17 from long range against the Matadors (1-7).

The Matadors, who have lost three in a row, more than matched Arizona State from long distance. Northridge made 13 of 21 three-pointers to the Sun Devils’ 11 of 30.

Brooklyn McLinn of Northridge made four of six three-point attempts and finished with a team-high 16 points. Shawn Stone and Ryan Martin scored 13 points each for the Matadors.

Ron Riley scored 22 points for Arizona State and Dwayne Fontana added 21. Burton, an East L.A. College transfer, had 12 points.
