Form Suggested to Commend Officers

Hoping to accentuate the positive, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick recommended Tuesday that the city create a form to allow citizens to make appreciative comments about officers of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Chick suggested that the form be made available at all police stations, substations and public meeting locations throughout the city.

She also asked that the city advertise the form on its public-access cable television channel.

While several panels have highlighted the problems of the LAPD after the 1992 riots, “there has been little focus on what can be done to encourage the positive recognition of police officers,” she said in her motion to the City Council.

Comments would be sent to the chief of police and the Board of Police Commissioners. Chick’s proposal will be considered by the City Council some time after the first of the year.

The LAPD now gives commendations to officers who have performed their duties with exceptional skill or concern for public safety.
