Jeff Lukas’ Condition Still Critical

Jeff Lukas, the assistant trainer who was seriously injured while trying to stop a runaway horse at Santa Anita last week, remained in critical condition Wednesday, according to Peggy Yost, spokeswoman of the Wayne Lukas Racing Stable.

Lukas, who has worked for his father since 1978, has been listed as critical for the last six days.

“Jeff remains in a coma and is still on a respirator,” Yost said. “Doctors are trying to relieve the cerebral pressure, which is very important. He had pneumonia, but now they have that under control. His condition is still very critical and hasn’t changed.”

Lukas, 36, was knocked to the ground and suffered multiple skull fractures as he tried to stop Tabasco Cat, a stakes-winning 2-year-old colt, near his father’s barn.
