SANTA ANA : Trustee for College District Is Appointed
The Rancho Santiago College District board has appointed Lawrence R. Labrado to replace a founding member who resigned last month.
The Board of Trustees chose Labrado from a field of 15 during a public meeting on Monday. He replaces Carol Enos, who resigned in December, citing health reasons and an early retirement from her teaching job.
The board voted 4 to 1 to appoint Labrado. Trustees Brian Conley, Michael Ortell, Enriqueta Ramos and Charles W. (Pete) Maddox voted in favor of Labrado. Shirley Ralston voted against him, and Tom Saenz abstained.
Labrado, 54, of Orange has worked for Cal State Fullerton in numerous jobs for more than 20 years. He is now the university’s outreach counselor, responsible for encouraging underrepresented students to transfer to the campus.
“I think Larry will be an excellent trustee because of his commitment, experience in education and his involvement in the community,” Maddox said after the vote.
“I believe he has given a lot to the community and that he still has much to give.”
Labrado is representing Trustee Area 3, which covers Villa Park and portions of Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Anaheim and Orange. Enos’ unfinished term expires in November, said Vicki Stevens, board secretary.
Taking over the position in the middle of a term should pose no difficulty, Labrado said after his appointment.
“I’ve been in education for 21 years, so I have a good idea what’s going on. It’s familiar, so I’ll hit the ground running,” he said.
“It’s going to be a challenge, but I enjoy challenges.”
