The city has received a federal grant through the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to plant 150 Italian Cypress trees in the Brea Junior High School Park.

The $7,450 grant will be used to buy and plant the trees along the northeast property line of the park, which is adjacent to the Country Road Homeowners Assn. clubhouse and pool area.

The project originated as a solution to the association’s concerns, including noise and dust from the park. Also, city officials said the clubhouse has been damaged when struck by balls flying from the park.

Brea is one of 85 government agencies in California awarded grants totaling $3,484,448. About 47,000 trees will be planted throughout the state through the Small Business Appropriation Act of 1990, which authorized the grants for the purpose of contracting with small businesses to plant trees on publicly owned and controlled land, city officials said.

The city is seeking bids from local businesses for the purchase and planting of the trees. The planting is expected to occur on or near Arbor Day in March.
