Unifrance Film President Apologizes: Daniel Toscan du Plantier says he is sorry for a “bad joke” attributed to him in which he was quoted as saying the earthquake in Los Angeles was God’s retribution to Hollywood. In a letter to Motion Picture Assn. of America President Jack Valenti, Toscan du Plantier wrote, “I feel ashamed,” and said he had made the remarks “among friends in a bar” in reference to the American versus French position on the audiovisual element of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. An angry Valenti last week wrote the Unifrance executive, saying the words had shocked and outraged him.
