DANA POINT : Lady Washington Finally Gets to Port

Stiff winds and high seas couldn’t keep the Lady Washington out of Dana Point Harbor for long.

On its third try, the 112-foot vintage tall ship completed a journey from San Diego on Thursday, after foul weather had forced the crew to turn back on both Monday and Tuesday.

The Lady Washington is a replica of the first colonial American vessel to reach the West Coast. The modern version is equipped with an engine, but despite the technological improvement, Capt. William Larson said the ship still couldn’t make any headway in the storm.

Normally based at Grays Harbor Historical Seaport in Aberdeen, Wash., the Lady Washington is on a tour of West Coast ports. The vessel will be open to the public at the Orange County Marine Institute throughout the next two weekends.
