Ila Borders became the first women to pitch in a collegiate baseball game and went the distance, allowing five hits with three walks and two strikeouts as Southern California College beat Claremont-Mudd, 12-1, in a nonconference game Tuesday at SCC.

Borders, a freshman from Whittier Christian High, had her shutout bid ended by Gabe Rosenthal’s leadoff home run in the eighth inning.

The Vanguards (2-4) scored eight runs in the third inning. Dave Seeley, Jason Brissey and Ryan Seidel each drove in two runs for SCC, which has won two consecutive games.
