BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Baileys Lead Loyola Over Saugus
The brothers Bailey each scored a game high 18 points as Mission League champion Loyola outdistanced Saugus, 68-47, Friday night in a Division I-A second-round playoff game.

Roosevelt 50, Garfield 48--Mario Hernandez made two free throws with 55 seconds left to break a 48-48 tie in a Southeastern Conference game Friday at Roosevelt.
Records: Garfield 7-17, 3-9; Roosevelt 11-11, 7-5.
Pilgrim 92, Wise 43--The Patriots used a full-court press and a 25-3 first-half run to bury the Wildcats in a Southern Section Division V-AA first-round playoff game Friday at Brentwood High.
Records: Pilgrim 19-5.
Verbum Dei vs. Kern Valley (forfeit)--Verbum Dei was awarded a first-round victory by forfeit when Kern Valley failed to arrive on time for a 7:30 p.m. Southern Section Division IV-A game at Compton College. School officials said the Kern Valley team first drove to Verbum Dei High thinking the game was there, and did not arrive at Compton College until 8:30 p.m. The referees declared the game a forfeit and awarded the victory to the Eagles (21-2).
Huntington Park 49, South Gate 45--Spartan guard Joe Covvarubias scored a game-high 17 points in a Central League game Friday at South Gate. Guard Omar Herrera led the Rams with 16 points.
Records: Huntington Park 9-12, 4-7.
Jordan 93, Locke 80--Guard Clem Breedlove missed 18 shots from the floor but still scored a game-high 35 points as the Bulldogs won a Southeastern Conference game Friday at Locke. Forward Ronald Smith led the Saints with 22.
Records: Jordan 15-7, 8-3; Locke 5-15, 2-9.
Bell 67, Jefferson 66--Ruben Munoz made a 15-foot jump shot with three seconds left to give Bell an Eastern League win Friday at Jefferson. Jerry Espinoza had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles, who finished in first place.

Fremont 74, Huntington Park 44--Pathfinder guard Beaver Patterson scored a game-high 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a Southeastern Conference game Thursday at Fremont. Joe Covarrubias led the Spartans with 14.
Records: Fremont 19-5, 11-0; Huntington Park 8-12, 3-7.
Jordan 87, Garfield 42--Guard Clem Breedlove scored 19 of his game-high 35 points in the second quarter in an Eastern League game Thursday at Jordan. Garfield’s Cesar Gonzales scored 18 points.

Manual Arts 69, Palisades 59--David Rickenbacker had 27 points and 12 rebounds Thursday as the Toilers won the Metro League title for the second year in a row at Manual Arts.

Washington 72, Dorsey 59--Washington forward Dayron Harris scored a game-high 28 points in a Southern Pacific game Thursday at Washington. Guard Sherwyn Morgan led the Dons with 14 points.

Crenshaw 125, Dorsey 78--Forward Tremaine Fowlkes converted four three-point plays en route to scoring a game-high 30 points in a Southern Pacific Conference victory Tuesday at Crenshaw. Guard Ricky Blackmon led Dorsey with 19 points.

Loyola 81, Rowland 70--Forward Toby Bailey had 38 points, 14 rebounds and six assists in a Southern Section Division I-A first-round playoff game Tuesday at Loyola.
Records: Loyola 20-5, Rowland 13-11.
Washington 67, Carson 61--Forward Dayron Harris scored 24 points on eight-of-16 shooting from the floor in a Southern Pacific Conference game Tuesday at Carson. Guard Antonio Lewis chipped in 14 points for the Generals.
Records: Washington 10-11, 3-6.
Jefferson 71, Garfield 70--Anthony Martin sank three free throws in the second overtime to give Jefferson a Southeastern Conference win Tuesday at home. Martin finished with 28 points.

Lincoln 44, Wilson 35--Gerardo Roman led all scorers with 21 points in a Northern Conference game Tuesday at Wilson.
Records: Lincoln 21-8, 7-4.
Huntington Park 63, Locke 56--Guard Joe Covarrubias scored a game-high 16 points in a Southeastern Conference game Tuesday at Locke. Freal Lee led the way for Locke with 14 points.

Manual Arts 94, Hamilton 76--David Rickenbacker had 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Toilers to a Coastal Conference win Tuesday at Manual Arts.

Roosevelt 67, South Gate 55--A forfeit loss under appeal became academic for the Roughriders on Thursday as they clinched their fourth Southeastern Conference title in six seasons under Coach Lorenzo Garcia. Denise Caudillo had 23 points as Roosevelt stretched a one-point lead to 52-36 in four minutes. Roosevelt poured in a season-high for one period with 30 points in the third quarter.
Records: Roosevelt 16-2, 9-1; South Gate 15-5, 8-2.
Garfield 37, Locke 28--Miriam Gonzalez had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Deana Duran scored 10 for the host Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference game Friday.

Jefferson 71, Bell 47--Jackie Leverett scored 27 points as the Democrats completed Eastern League play undefeated for the second consecutive season Friday.

Roosevelt 58, Jordan 35--Zenobia Tyson Hunt (14 points), Denise Caudillo (13) and Edna Alvarez (10) paced the Roughriders’ three-way scoring attack in a Southeastern Conference game Friday.

Crenshaw 48, Carson 35--Kristi Lattin scored 20 points Thursday as the Cougars finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Pacific League at Carson.

Garfield 49, Jordan 33--Maria Medina had 12 points for the host Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference victory Thursday.

Belmont 44, Hollywood 35--Maria Aguilar had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Zakiyyah Johnson added 10 points and 14 rebounds for the visiting Sentinals in a Northern Conference game Wednesday.

South Gate 44, Fremont 43--The host Rams rallied from an 11-point deficit with less than four minutes to play Tuesday, taking a 44-43 lead on Vanessa Martinez’s two free throws with 40 seconds left in the Southeastern Conference game.

Belmont 36, Franklin 34--Maricela Gracia, who scored 12 points, made a three-point basket to give the Sentinels a 35-34 lead in the Northern Conference game Tuesday at Franklin.

Jefferson 76, Garfield 47--Kyetra Brown (25 points), Jackie Leverett (20) and Chaka Smith (21) combined for 66 points for the visiting Democrats in a Southeastern Conference game Tuesday. Deana Duran scored 16 points for Garfield.

Crenshaw 71, Dorsey 27--Kim Howse had 30 points and 16 rebounds to lead defending City 4-A champion Crenshaw to a Pacific League win Tuesday at Dorsey.

Roosevelt 80, Huntington Park 34--Denise Caudillo and Edna Alvarez led 12 Roosevelt scorers with 19 and 17 points, respectively, in a Southeastern Conference game Tuesday at Huntington Park.
