Father Suspected of Role in Stabbing : Crime: Police say he gave his 15-year-old daughter the knife she used to injure a junior high classmate.
VAN NUYS — The father of a 15-year-old girl remained in custody Saturday for providing his daughter with a box-cutter-type knife she used to stab a junior high school classmate, Los Angeles police said.
Gary Kaufman, 36, of Sun Valley was with his daughter outside Fulton Junior High School when she allegedly sliced a classmate’s cheek Friday with a knife that he had given her, authorities said.
The attack appeared to stem from a long-running dispute over a boyfriend, according to police.
Later Friday, in an apparent retaliation, two men in their 20s, believed to be friends of the victim, went to Kaufman’s apartment building in the 8400 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and shot at Kaufman after he opened the door, police said.
More than 10 shots were fired, but Kaufman was struck only once in the leg as he ran back into the apartment. Kaufman was taken by police to Pacifica Hospital of the Valley in Sun Valley, where he was treated for his wound.
North Hollywood Division officers turned the father and daughter over to the Van Nuys Division, where they were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
After the 3 p.m. attack Friday, the victim, also 15, of Pacoima, ran into the school in the 7000 block of Kester Avenue for help. She was taken to Northridge Medical Center, where she was treated for a laceration to her face and released, police said.
Authorities have no suspects in the shooting incident involving Kaufman.
