Bonnett Wrote Wife a Letter Before Dying
After Neil Bonnett died, his widow found in the family safe a letter he wrote after longtime friend and fellow NASCAR driver Davey Allison was killed last summer.
Susan Bonnett wouldn’t reveal specifics of the letter, but said it “made a lot of things OK.”
Bonnett had added more to the letter a few days before leaving for Daytona Beach, Fla., to practice for the Daytona 500, she said. He died Feb. 11 after a crash while qualifying for the race.
Susan Bonnett said the letter outlined the things her husband wished he had said and done through the years.
Before she found his letter in the safe Thursday, she wrote a similar letter to her late husband and placed it in the breast pocket of the jacket in which he was buried.
“There were some things in the two letters that were almost identical,” she told the Birmingham News. “I believe we both knew something would happen.”
