GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : St. Bernard Goes Up 37-0, Wins, 106-16
Playa del Rey St. Bernard rolled to a 106-16 victory over Cerritos Whitney in a Southern Section Division IV-AA first-round game at St. Bernard Saturday.
St. Bernard led by 37-0 after one quarter, 61-9 at halftime and 84-12 at the end of three quarters. St. Bernard’s starters played only 18 minutes each.
“They kept launching three pointers that didn’t go in and we were a lot bigger and got every rebound,” said St. Bernard Coach Lori Pawinski.
Senior center Marte Alexander scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Olympia Scott scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for eighth-ranked St. Bernard (22-5). Whitney finished 4-15.

No. 3 Alemany 58, Katella 39--Alemany center Carly Funicello scored 20 points and blocked eight shots for Alemany (24-0) in a II-A at St. Francis High in La Canada.

No. 4 Ventura Buena 72, Downey 21--Mikko Giordano scored 22 points and Buena (21-2) outscored Downey, 25-3, in the third quarter, in a second-round I-A game.

No. 6 Palos Verdes Peninsula 62, Apple Valley 56 (OT)--Senior guard Mimi McKinney had a game-high 39 points and 18 rebounds for Peninsula (22-3) in a I-AA game at Palos Vedes. She scored four points in overtime.

No. 7 Cerritos Gahr 55, Inglewood 37--Nicki Oliver scored 14 points and Shannon Gale added 11 to lead Gahr (12-15) at Inglewood (10-12) in a II-AA game.

Cerritos 55, No. 10 Oxnard Channel Islands 53--Senior forward Shannon Perry made two free throws with three seconds remaining to lift Cerritos (14-11) to a I-A second-round victory over Channel Islands (23-4) at Cerritos.

No. 11 La Puente Bishop Amat 57, Charter Oak 40--Jen Griffen scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead host Bishop Amat (23-1) in a II-A game.

No.19 Fontana 56, Ayala 42--Shermayne Murphy scored 11 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter for Fontana (21-4) in I-AA.
