Swiss Ban Foreign Trucks: In a referendum, 52% of the voters approved a proposal to force all truck trailers crossing Switzerland between northern and southern Europe to be shipped by railroad within 10 years. Trucks carrying goods to or from Switzerland and domestic traffic will be exempt. The outcome was a stinging rebuke to the four-party governing coalition, which had argued the ban would violate international transport treaties and “provoke politically and economically harmful retaliation from abroad.”
