District Does Have Plan
Your Feb. 4 story on the Ventura County Community College District (“College Officials Seek Disaster Plan”) states that our organization did not have an emergency plan in place for our students and staff. In fact, our district and its three colleges have had an emergency plan in place since approval by the Board of Trustees in 1984. This plan uses the same philosophy, approach and structure as the plans developed by other public entities, and each member of the staff has been given a copy of the plan.
Emergency-plan training is an ongoing activity throughout our district. In addition, the necessary medical and rescue materials are stored and ready for use at each college, and all district vehicles contain instructions on emergency procedures.
The terrible disaster on Jan. 17 did reveal, however, that our internal communications network requires greater refinement, and this has been a high priority effort since that date.
