Exercise Rider Critically Hurt at Gulfstream
HALLANDALE, Fla. — Two exercise riders were hurt, one critically, and one horse was killed in two unrelated accidents at Gulfstream Park on Monday.
Mary Rafferty, 42, was exercising Vindication when the 4-year-old filly suffered a broken left front leg and collapsed. Rafferty was rushed to Hollywood Memorial Hospital, where she was in critical condition with a broken back. Vindication was destroyed.
One hour later, Kelly Allen, 23, was jogging Medical Pro when the horse bolted and collided with another horse. Allen, 23, was treated and released at Aventura Medical Hospital.
