BRIEFLY : Film: Screenwriting Award Winner Selected
Stuart Beattie of Santa Monica placed first in the Diane Thomas Awards for screenwriting, taking top honors with a script about a helicopter hijacking.
Beattie, a Santa Monica resident, was recognized for his screenplay “Mayday,” about a Coast Guard rescue swimmer who responds to a helicopter hijacking. He shared the top spot with P.G. Thomas, whose “Two Dogs Running” is the tale of a sharpshooting 16-year-old girl in the 1930s who joins forces with a young ex-con to rob banks.
Other award winners were Robert Dorian, Adrianne Stone, Patricia Mayo Ford, Joseph Swinger and Sarah Werner.
The awards are named in honor of former UCLA Extension screenwriting student Diane Thomas, who died in an automobile accident shortly after she wrote the hit film “Romancing the Stone.”
