Hofstra Makes NCAA Field as 9-20 Team
AMHERST, N.Y. — In his final college season, former Laker coach Butch Van Breda Kolff is poised to go out with a team that defines Cinderella.
James Shaffer scored 20 points and led five players in double figures as Hofstra (9-20) outlasted Northeastern Illinois (17-11) for an 88-86 double-overtime victory in the championship game of the East Coast Conference tournament Sunday.
Van Breda Kolff has announced his retirement as Hofstra’s coach at the end of the season.
The game saw 13 ties and 20 lead changes before Shaffer’s go-ahead basket put the Flying Dutchmen ahead to stay, 85-83, with 30 seconds to play in the second overtime. Ulysses Moran had tied it with a layup 12 seconds earlier.
